In light of the recent, disturbing events in Orlando, the Gay Men's Chior of Los Angeles dedicated their summer concert, Oye Mi Canto (Hear My Song), to the lives that were tragically lost and the voices that will no longer be heard. Oye Mi Canto (Hear My Song), features the driving rhythms and captivating melodies from the island nation that have inspired passion in hearts around the world. Audiences enjoyed the rich sounds of the salsa, mambo and Afro-Cuban jazz in a truly historic performance.

 

Maria performed with Oye Mi Canto and brought her Afro-Cuban dances as well as traditions to the stage. Maria says, "It was my honor and pleasure to be part of such an amazing show and to have the opportunity to work with GMCLA at such a critical time."

Albion College’s Organization for Latino/Latina Awareness [OLA] and the feminist group Power combined their efforts to present activist, comedian and actress Maria Costa to the student body. Maria Costa had her education at Wayne State University. She began working on PBS, moved to Los Angeles and was soon cast in multiple television shows on different networks. Costa noticed a similar theme occurring with her casting, so she decided to start her new show, Macho Men and the Women Who Love Them.

The show brings up issues of race and feminism through a couple: one woman who cares about her career path, and a very proud man. Their conflicting personalities cause them to butt heads, but they always grow from their experiences. Costa uses comedy, dancing, multiple costume changes and live music to reach her audience.

Oro Entertainment plans to spin off the live show — which has sold out in theaters along the West Coast in audiences ranging from 1,500 to 5,000 — into a feature film and, eventually, a television series.

Global Comedian Stars In Tech Incubator

Macho Men is the brainchild of Maria Costa, a 36 year-old Latina who grew up in the Hispanic section of Detroit, moved to Los Angeles, became a sought-after television and movie actress comedian and model, and creator of a one-woman performance that looks into the relationships of women and their respective ultra-macho men -“ including her father, transsexual brother and her mother-in-law. Costa is backed up by a salsa band and a dance troupe.

Costa and her men are the recipient of a starter grant from TechTown that will help her and her company, Oro (“gold” in Spanish -“ and a prominent decorative element in her office) develop the screenplay for a multi-million dollar movie production.
